Why are two vehicles that exactly the same year, make, and model a different price?

Every vehicle has had a different driving life and gone through different driving conditions. If you’re comparing two 2015 Ford Escapes, they could be in completely different conditions. While one was owned by a single driver who rarely drove, the other was owned by three different people who drove daily and one was a smoker. It’s important to find out as much as possible about a vehicle’s history.

How Much can I get for My Trade-in?

For the reasons we listed above, there’s no right and wrong evaluation of your vehicle. Before you trade-in your vehicle you should get a rough idea of what it is worth by using an online resource like Canadian Black Book. This is just an approximate value, and a lot of other factors come into play. Market demand for the vehicle, overall condition, and other factors will determine what you’re offered by a dealership. The right value is one you’re comfortable with, but remember to have realistic expectations.

What is Depreciation?

Depreciation is the amount of value your vehicle loses after you’ve purchased it. New vehicles will lose value as soon as you drive them off the lot. With a used vehicle, however, most of the depreciation has already happened. So, generally, if you buy a used vehicle and go to sell it a couple of years later, you’ll be able to get closer to what you bought it for versus a new vehicle. Of course, what you get for a vehicle also relies on its condition.
