The Real Reasons Ford F-150 Smashes Rival Pickup Trucks in Canada

Made you look. That should have been the slogan for the Ford F-150. From its smooth yet rugged appearance to the pure power under the hood, there are plenty of reasons this work beast tops the charts as Canada’s highest selling (and most drooled over) pickup truck.

But let’s be honest, this pickup is not without its rivals. Much like Coke vs. Pepsi, Nike vs. Reebok, or the Roughriders vs. the Stampeders, there can only be one winner. Each year the Ram 1500 and GMC Sierra (and it's cousin the Chevy Silverado) make their best efforts to show up to the party but leave with their tailgates between their rear wheels in defeat. While we can remain diplomatic, the facts don’t care about feelings (not to mention we are talking about inanimate objects). In October 2017, the Ford F Series outsold both Ram and Sierra combined.

The Ford F-150 Wins on Price

Like many Canadians, owning a pickup truck goes beyond vanity and is often a necessity. These vehicles are meant to enhance the work and productivity of our local farmers and trades workers. While it’s not the least expensive of the rival pickups, it certainly provides the most value.

The MSRP on the 2018 F-150 comes in at $30,499 with the competing GMC Sierra at $31,630. When it comes to the dollars and cents of it when running a business, every penny (or the nearest round number) counts and the F-150 won’t disappoint.  

Safety First

For some reason or another, safety ratings are a weakness for other pickup trucks. The F-150 boasts a whopping 5/5 star safety rating in three out of four categories it was tested in by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If there is one thing that’s clear, Ford understands that these vehicles are made for people who work in environments where safety is crucial. This pickup has been put through its paces and consistently ranks top of the heap.

Style Comes Standard

We already mentioned the rugged handsomeness of this beast, but something about the interior of this truck says, “Please drive me!” Ford has successfully bridged the gap between rugged workhorse and comfortable

Remember back in the '80s, and '90s when the interior of a pickup truck looked like it had been slapped together with spare parts from a junkyard? Not anymore! Adding to its value is the fact that you have to upgrade trim levels in competing models like the Ram 1500 or Sierra to get the style points that come standard in the base F-150 like comfort and plenty of space!

But What About Efficiency?

In addition to its versatility, F-150 owns efficiency. Not only does it have the power to haul heavy loads with ease, but the F-150’s 3.3L *Ti-VCT  V6 only uses 12.3L / 100km of fuel in the city and 9.3L / 100km on the highway.

*Ti-VCT = Variable Camshaft Timing is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Ford. For twin cam or DOHC engines, VCT was used on either the intake or exhaust camshaft. Engines that have VCT on both camshafts are now designated as Ti-VCT - source: Wikipedia.

Need a Monster?

In the towing and hauling department, Ford must have collaborated with Dr. Bannor because they created The Hulk! The Ram 1500 is nothing to scoff at with a towing capability of 11,000 lbs. The F-150, however, politely smiles while adding more weight to its load topping out at 12,200 lbs of tow capability while carrying 3,270 lbs! Read that again - we’ll wait!

Let’s not forget the convenient towing tech features, including trailer backup assist, dynamic hitch assist, a smart trailer tow connector, and a tow/haul driving mode that uses engine braking to take some pressure off the brakes.
