As the leading domestic brand in the country, we see a lot of families come through our doors. We know that each family has unique needs when it comes to their vehicles, and that’s why we always make sure to compare our customers’ needs to our lineup. One of the latest comparison questions we’re often seeing is “Which is better, the Ecosport or the Focus?” — they both shine in different areas, so we’re comparing the two to help you make the right buying decision.
Just like the Ecosport, the Focus is a compact vehicle. The Focus; however, is classed as a passenger sedan. There are 1.0L and 2.0L Ecoboost engine options that can pump out considerable power for a vehicle of its size. For gas mileage, you’ll find 8.9L/100km or 11 kpl average performance.
The Focus offers both standard and hatchback stylings with a variety of different trim levels to meet your needs. The sedan option has 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space, with the hatchback offering more at 44.8 with the rear seats folded down. If you’re tight on space, the smaller footprint of the Focus will serve you best.
The Ford Ecosport is a new vehicle to our lineup this year. The first of its kind crossing true style and function, the Ecosport also offers 1.0L and 2.0L Ecoboost engine options. The Ecoboost gets an impressive 11~kpl. You’ll find 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up, and 91.1 with the rear seats folded down. There’s seating for five, with similar infotainment options and technology to the Ford Focus.
A unique point you’ll find on the Ecosport is the rear door or hatch is hinged on the left side, so you’ll find the motion of opening a door rather than rising upward. Visually, it has the appearance and shape of a hatchback, with a frame and heft of a smaller SUV. If you’re looking for towing options, the Ecosport will beat out the Focus. While the Focus has very little in terms of towing capacity, the Ecosport can tow 1,400 lbs and an impressive 2,000 lbs with the AWD version.
In terms of function, the Ecosport is great for city and highway driving. It’s nimble handling makes cornering and traffic a breeze, while the fuel mileage puts our long Saskatchewan highways to the test.
Both of these vehicles have an impressive amount of technology built-in. Here are some of the features that you’ll find available between them:
So what’s the scoop? Both vehicles seat five and are low enough to the ground to make loading the rear a breeze. Between the two, the Focus is lower to the ground but houses slightly less cargo space. Gas mileage specs are similar on the two units; Ford estimated values are incredibly close, while user reports suggest that the Focus gets more bang for your buck while in the city. Out of the box, standard trims and options on the Ecosport offer more connections, towing capabilities, and media options.
If you’re looking for a more serious differentiator, look to price. Our Ecosports currently start a $28,639 and Focus models start at $20,318. If you’re looking to save money but still fit the family, the Focus might be a better option. If you have lots of adventure gear, soccer balls, hockey sticks, and luggage, the Ecosport will likely be worth the extra. If not, the Focus is more than capable.
